The Car Counselor: Keith Whann

Keith Whann, is the founder of the law firm Whann & Associates LLC, located in Dublin, Ohio. Over a career that has spanned 25 years from a beginning as an Assistant Ohio Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division thru today, as General Counsel of the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association, a co-owner, CEO and General Counsel of the Columbus Fair Auto Auction and The Car Counselor to the motor vehicle industry, Keith has become a leading national authority on motor vehicle and consumer protection issues.

Through the years Keith has had over 1,000 articles published in trade journals across the country and his monthly columns discussing compliance and consumer protection issues and providing legal updates to the industry continue to be favorites of dealers and consumers alike.

Keith has conducted hundreds of seminars across the country and appeared as a featured speaker on a wide variety of topics affecting the industry. He has spoken at conventions and meetings for over 50 national and state motor vehicle industry related trade associations and regulatory agencies dealing with complex automobile industry issues.

At the conclusion of these seminars Keith would end with an open Q&A session.  These sessions became so popular (ruining numerous meeting schedules along the way) that he developed "Ask the Car Counselor" to make the Q&A session an event in itself. In 2004, at the suggestion of friends, Keith took the show on the road to 97.1 FM in Amarillo, Texas and The Car Counselor program was born.  Unbeknownst at the time, Keith’s two-hour program was one of the first live broadcasts over the Internet.

Since that time, many of Keith's presentations have been filmed and broadcast on the NIADA.TV and Automotive Consumer Television networks, including the seven hour 2005 and 2006 National Dealer Compliance and Profitability Expos (which Keith both developed and moderated) and various presentations at NIADA National Conventions and Regional Education Conferences from 2005 to 2009.
Keith has also developed numerous training and compliance programs for the motor vehicle industry.  In 2005, he launched the KeithWhann.com website containing information, a series of tools and various resource materials to assist motor vehicle dealers with business, legal and compliance matters.  In 2006, Keith added sections to the site for consumers to answer their questions and provide them with information to assist them in the car buying and ownership processes.  Today, audio and video answers to hundreds of dealer and consumer questions appear in the Car Counselor section of the site.

Keith’s latest project finds him as one of the developers of the recently launched www.Auttr.com social media website dedicated to the automotive industry. The site not only allows dealers, consumers and the automotive industry as a whole to network, communicate and share information individually and in groups, but also allows you to search for a vehicle and provides instant access to up to the minute industry news, information and answers to questions in written, audio and video formats, with a few live broadcasts for good measure.  Think Facebook, with Twitter capability, the functionality of a MySpace or Linked-in, combined with industry news and information feeds, along with the ability to have a question answered, search for a car or watch and participate in one of Keith’s live broadcasts and - you’ve got Auttr!

In March of 2009 Keith was asked to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection at a hearing titled, “Consumer Protection in the Used and Subprime Car Market.”  Leading up to his testimony, the automobile industry was facing its toughest times in over two decades.
A sluggish economy with sagging auto sales, auto Manufacturers filing for bankruptcy, lenders leaving the automotive sector and consumer bankruptcy rates rising to all time highs were producing a very negative environment in the industry.

As opposed to waiting for something to happen, Keith decided to try and do something to improve what he saw around him.  Using the Troubled Asset Relief Program’s “TARP” acronym he created his own TARP: “Together Automotive Retailing Prospers” with a goal of bringing positive, lasting change to the automotive industry one car deal at a time.  Over 30 lenders and 300 plus attendees participated in the first TARP Event in March.  Over 50 lenders and 900 plus attendees participated at TARP Event at the NIADA Convention in June.

Keith is introducing a new expanded TARP Program.  Its mission is to enable capital to flow to car dealers for floor planning of inventory, develop additional finance sources for retail customers, introduce the new NIADA certified vehicle program, enhance and improve dealership F&I processes and teach the keys to a dealer’s online success.  And now, Keith will also be unveiling his new “Car Buying IS FUN” Program for consumers teaching them the right way to boy a car.  Add it all together,
and that’s what the Car Counselor’s TARP is all about!
